On 6 March 2026, in the Abbey Church, the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music conferred an honorary doctorate in Sacred Music upon James MacMillan, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to contemporary sacred music.

During the ceremony, he delivered a profound lecture reflecting on silence, faith, and the vocation of the composer today. Speaking of the importance of silence in the creative and spiritual life, he remarked: “Descend into silence and you will become an extension of it.”

For the first time, the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music invites choir singers, music educators, priests, seminarians, and religious to take part in a unique international gathering designed to inspire, teach, and deepen faith through music.

Participants will experience a rich week of choral workshops, lectures, and moments of reflection—bringing together the vitality of a music festival with the depth of contemplative prayer. The program will conclude with the celebration of Holy Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, highlighting the sacred beauty of music at the heart of the Church.
